Lecture Topics

  • "Real World" Success:
On my way to a successful post-collegiate career in television I found out quickly that life has a way of throwing a few curveballs. In this refreshingly humorous lecture, I'll take the audience on my journey of self-discovery after college. Along the way I'll discusses the life decisions that lead this Tufts University grad to homelessness and unemployment. Though a painful process, I'll illustrate the importance of self-esteem, goal setting and work-ethic in overcoming obstacles. This interactive lecture helps students prepare for life after college by troubleshooting issues applicable to future grads and also encouraging students to reach their full potential through organization, goal-oriented thinking and the development of a healthy and positive self-image.
  • Crippled Capacities:
Though I was a nationally ranked swimmer at the age of 17, a near death accident forced me to question whether I'd ever walk again. This unfortunate accident, compounded with "the coming out" process would bring down even the bravest of athletes. Despite this, I found a way to defy the odds and fulfill my lifelong dream of competing at the NCAA championships through commitment, hard work and perseverance. In this lecture, I'll demonstrate that though injuries (both physical and emotional) can be crippling, they don't always have to be. Confronting my homosexuality and physical limitations, my lifelong passion for sports could not be thwarted. This lecture provides audiences with a renewed sense of empowerment and also provides a guide to overcoming the impossible.
  • Bridging the Gap:
Coming out is a difficult process: try doing it in the frozen tundra of the midwest! In this emotionally uplifting lecture, I'll take the audience through my own coming out process set in suburban Minnesota while attending Catholic school. This journey of self-actualization would have been impossible without the help of my straight allies. This lecture encourages the continued involvement of the straight community in social and political gay issues. I'll discuss many of the problems facing gay and lesbian youth from body image to depression and highlight how important straight allies are in creating a safe environment. Too often straight allies are left saying, "What can I do?" I'll use humor and anecdotes to answer this question, while demonstrating the importance of discourse between the straight and gay communities with the ultimate goal of bridging the proverbial "gap."
  • General Real World Q &A:
The opportunity to view an episode with me: I'll give you the inside scoop on what really went down.
